Debutant actor Shiva Kandukuri awaits the release of 'Choosi Choodangane' on January 31.  In this interview, the newcomer talks about what struck him about the rom-com, what makes 'CC' unique, his upcoming movie and more.

Theatre background

I wanted to become an actor for many years.  However, I used to have self-doubts.  During graduation, I picked Theatre while in the US and started giving performances in front of my peers.  I used to observe their reactions to my performance.  My confidence slowly grew as the years passed.

A purposive script

My father (producer Raj Kandukuri) made me realize that the film industry is a place where the success ratio is very poor. I decided for myself that I will pick only unique scripts.  'Choosi Choodangane' is a natural story where every character and situation is purposive.  There are no extraneous elements and the characters are extremely relatable.  The story takes place over a period of eight years.  A lot of elements are relatable.

Refreshing characterizations

The scenes are fresh and the characterizations are creative.  For example, I am a wedding photographer, while the heroine is a wannabe musician.  Gopi Sundar garu's music is a big plus; his songs are one of the major assets.  We did a 30-day workshop before taking the film to the floors.  It was easy that way to get into comfort zone.

Being in touch with Telugu

Despite being educated in the US, I have always kept myself abreast with Telugu.  I read Telugu-language books and always make it a point to converse in Telugu with my parents.

Script occupies primacy for my dad

When it comes to my father, he gives primacy to the script.  In my case as well, he has followed the same principle.  He prefers true-to-life movies and always judges things dispassionately. He has liked my performance in the movie and asked me to improve my skills.  As for a female technician directing this movie, how does it matter?  Her story-telling is efficient and that's what matters.

Playing a cricketer

My next film is in the post-production stage.  The characterization is unique and the script is highly emotional in nature.  I am a cricketer in this sports-based movie.  It's directed by Srujana Rao and has music by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja garu.  I am thankful that I got to work with him so early in my career.  I am thankful to the director.  Shriya Saran has a key role in the movie.

Chiru as inspiration

Megastar Chiranjeevi garu is my favourite, as I grew up watching him. I hold immense respect for him.  He is as passionate today as he was before he became a star.  He appreciates small films and supports them wholeheartedly.

Going strong already

Even before the release of my first movie, I have got two more offers.  The second one is already on the floors.  I am quite happy.  Crime-comedies and thrillers are my favourite genres.  I don't have a dream role as such. I prefer relatable stories.  No matter how much entertaining a film is, the audience will not remember it if there is no emotional connect.
