Tamil film industry has seen many multi-talented personalities. While almost of them are skilled in multiple departments of film-making, this veteran, a former associate of K.Balachander is an expert in films, theater and television. Yes, we are referring to Visu who has achieved laurels as an scriptwriter, filmmaker, actor, playwright, theater personality and Television Talk show anchor.
He has been out of the limelight for the past few years due to some health related issues and will be making a comeback as an actor playing the most memorable Naradhar Naidu character in the upcoming sequel of his 1982 blockbuster Manal Kayiru`. In this exclusive and detailed interview with Indiaglitz, the thespian shares a lot about the sequel, current trends of film industry. Tamil theater, his days as a TV anchor and many more. Excerpts:
How Manal Kayiru sequel happened?
After the success of Manal Kayiru`, there was no talk about it for the past thirty years. In 2015 S.V.Sekar approached me. His son Ashwin aspires to make it big. He has so far acted in three films and all of them have done average. He felt if a script helps him Sekar approached me with the idea of making a sequel to Manal Kayiru`. I gave it a thought. Sekar was a part and parcel Manal Kayiru 1982 and if its sequel is going to help his son whats wrong in that. So I said he can go ahead. Then we approached Kavithalaya. Balachander sir was alive then. He agreed. Pushpa (Kandasamy) madam also agreed. So Sekar is making a film on what happens after Manal Kayiru`. That is how the project started.
Tell us about your participation in the film?
Sekar wished I should direct the sequel. But I refused due to certain reasons and said a fresh face can direct the film matching with the present trend. He asked whether I can write the script at least. But i could not do even that as I was busy at that time. I suggested that a new script can be made based on the original script of Manal Kayiru. Then he requested I should reprise the Naradar Naidu role. Its a running role which is pivotal for the script. I said I can not attend the shoot for a long number of days. So I asked him to drop the idea. But upon his persistent request I accepted to do the role. I have shot for five days in the film. So Naradar Naidu will come in the sequel but not as lengthy as in the first part. Since it is a story of what happens after Manal Kayiru` the Naradar Naidu part has been reduced.
All are the characters of Manal Kayiru` retained in the sequel also?
Apart from the characters of S.V.Sekar and mine, there are a few other characters which will pop in our mind whenever we think of Manal Kayiru`. One is Manorama, Kishmu who acted her husband and the deaf old man who is also the heroine`s father. These three actors are not alive now. Shanthi Krishna who acted as the heroine said she can not act in the film. So not all characters of Manal Kayiru` will come in this film. Naradar Naidu will come. S.V.Sekar is acting in the same Kittumani character. Jayasri acts as his wife. The actor who acted as heroine`s twin brothers (Kuriyakose Ranga) is acting in the same dual roles in the sequel.
