Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II breathed her last in Scotland on Thursday. The 96-year-old monarch was not keeping well of late and was under medical supervision as doctors were “concerned for Her Majesty’s health”.

Her eldest son, Charles, 73, has succeeded as king, according to centuries of protocol followed by the British monarchs. The royal family - King Charles, grandsons William and Harry and their families - have gathered at her Balmoral retreat in the Scottish highlands, where she spent her last days.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," the new king, her eldest son Charles, said. "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," the 73-year-old said in a statement.

Before her death, Buckingham Palace said that doctors were “concerned” for her health and had recommended that she remain under medical supervision. "The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral," the statement said.

Reacting to Queen's death, Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, shared her condolence to the royal family. "In the demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, the world has lost a great personality. An era has passed since she steered her country and people for over 7 decades. I share the grief of the people of the UK and convey my heartfelt condolence to the family," the President tweeted.

Elizabeth has been the queen of Britain since 1952. She came to the throne after the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25. She became monarch at a time when Britain retained much of its empire.
