Indian scientists are about to introduce to the world the world's first contraceptive injection. The Drug Controller General of India will give the final approval within six months.

Dr RS Sharma, a senior scientist with the Indian Council of Medical Research, has said that the approval will come as expected. "The contraceptive works via an injection to a sperm-containing tube near the testicles," a report published by 'The Independent' says. It further adds, "It contains a polymer called Steryene Maleic Anhydride that inhibits sperm production."

The injection will be offered as a long-term alternative to a vasectomy. It's not permanent, as its potency will last 13 years.

Says Jack Murphy, an author, "I have been tracking the development of this male contraceptive for years. It effectively shreds sperm in the vas deferens and is reversible. India is about to make it available to the public. It will make it to the US eventually and be a game-changer."
