Director Virinchi Varma's second outing 'Majnu' has already created quite a buzz. In this exclusive interview to IndiaGlitz, the writer-director opens up about Nani, the film, and more.

Gap after first film was because..

After 'Uyyala Jampala', I wanted to do a different genre. As I had already done a rom-com, I wrote an action-based film and narrated the same to a couple of heroes. But they were not ready to do such a genre with me. They wanted a romantic film. That didn't interest me and two projects got called off in the process. It's true that Ram Mohan garu narrated the story of 'Soggade Chinni Nayana' and asked me if I would be interested in directing it. As I was busy with another script, I excused myself from that project. Moreover, I like to direct my own story.

'Majnu' and sincerity go hand in hand

'Majnu' conveys the message that love stories need not end in a break-up. Such a film needs a title that conveys sincerity. It has no resemblance whatsoever with Nagarjuna garu's old film. The hero is a sincere lover out to rise in love after a fall.

A new Nani here

So far, we have seen Nani as a light-veined lover boy. 'Majnu' is in contrast. He is playing a full-fledged serious lover with a heart. That doesn't mean that the movie is serious. It has fun orientation.

Story is the source of comedy

Comedy is derived from the main track itself. Sathya as Nani's friend does comedy, besides Vennela Kishore and Sapthagiri and Posani garu. The story itself is the source of comedy.

Curious about two heroines, huh?

Why does a sincere lover need two heroines, you ask? Well, people should get curious about that and come to the theaters.

Established heroines versus fresh faces

I wanted to choose fresh faces because 'Majnu' couldn't have seemed like a run-of-the-mill commercial film. We needed faces with no set image. We held many auditions and finalized Anu Emmanuel and Priyasri, who are respectively from Kerala and Mumbai. They will make a name for themselves after the movie. They put in a lot of effort to speak in Telugu.

Rajamouli garu is important

Rajamouli garu will be seen in a scene supposed to show the relationship between an assistant director and his director. He is playing an important character. Raj Tarun is playing a cameo.

More than what you expect

My next film will belong to a genre expected from me, plus something more. There has been a gap of 3 years after my first movie. But this time, the gap won't be huge.
