Farmer unions considering Modi governments proposal on temporary repeal

The Modi government has reportedly conveyed to farmer leaders that it is ready to suspend the farm laws for one or one and half year. Farmer unions are said to have taken the proposal very seriously.

With this, it is now possible that temporary repeal of the contentious laws has been achieved by the blackmail of the farmers of Punjab. Due to the vested interests of a small percentage of farmers, the entire country will now suffer the consequences of putting sensible reforms on the backburner. Many analysts are likening this to how, in 2015, Narendra Modi had to give up on the idea of reforming the land laws.

Commenting on the issue, columnist Aashish Chandorkar says that much of the impact of the farm laws can be realized State by State, given that many States had already enacted their own laws in 2020. That said, the Centre has climbed down and this is a loss of face, he adds.

Economic commentator Harsh Madhusudan writes that the suspension of agricultural reform laws for some time is perfectly fine. "The lopsided Minimum Support Price procurement tax rupees allocation is now exposed in front of the entire country and this must be acted upon. Actually, that was the real problem for the protestors," the author adds.
