The ruling BJP party has suffered a huge setback in the just concluded assembly elections of five states of Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Telangana. The Congress which fared poorly the last time in all these states has stood to gain a high margin of votes and is also forming the government in three of them.

The Makkal Neethi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan has reacted that "This is the first sign of change that the people have signaled through their verdict". It has long been signalled that Kamal is leaning towards the congress after his meetings with Rahul Gandhi and it remains to be seen if the two would grow even closer in the coming 2019 Parliamentary elections.
