The 20 year old blackbuck poaching case has finally come to end yesterday. Salman Khan was convicted while actors Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam and Tabu walked free of charges. Salman has been slammed with five years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10,000. For the uniniatiated, here’s a timeline that would help you understand the case over the years.
September 26, 1998:
It was during the shoot of Bollywood film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’. Five Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu were seen hunting two blackbucks. Salman gets convicted in court for hunting two chinkaras in Mathania near Jodhpur.
October 2, 1998:
Bishnoi community lodges a complaint against Salman Khan and four other actors involved in the killing of two blackbucks.
October 12,1998:
Salman Khan gets arrested and is let on bail after five days.
April 10,2006:
Salman Khan gets convicted in the blackbuck hunting case under the Wildlife Protection Act by a trial court. The actor was sentenced to five years of jail along with a fine of Rs.5,000.
August 31,2007:
The Rajasthan High Court suspends the sentence of Salman Khan but at the same time asks the actor to not leave the country without seeking a formal permission. Salman Khan also had to spend six days before the sentence was lifted. In response to his appeal, charges under the Arms Act were also dropped.
December 2012:
After a revision, the High Court charges Salman Khan under section 9/51 of the Wildlife Protection Act.
August 2013:
Salman Khan gets his visa denied to United Kingdom due to the conviction charges he was facing.
November 5,2014:
Salmana Khan appeals in the Supreme Court to enable him to apply for visa stating the reason that it will disrupt his shooting schedules. The SC claims that his conviction cannot be stayed just because he had trouble getting a British visa.
November 2014:
The Rajasthan government approaches the Supreme Court against the decision of the high court thus enabling the actor get his UK visa.
July 25,2016:
Rajasthan high court acquits Salman Khan in the chinkara poaching case.
October 19, 2016:
Rajasthan Government says to the Supreme Court that Salman Khan should surrender and go back to prison pertaining to the chinkara poaching case.
July 2017:
Salman Khan misses a bail bonds verification in a Jodhpur court citing security reasons.
January 2018:
Salman Khan appears in Jodhpur court for final arguments.
April 5,2018:
The 20 year old case comes to an end. Salman gets a jail sentence of five years along with a fine of Rs.5000 slammed on him.
