Here we have listed the highest rated films of the year by our review team and are pleased to see that this year too there is majority concurrence between us, our audiences and the box office.
Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga
Parthiban the creator took a back seat for many years playing second fiddle to the actor until a couple of years ago when he made a stunning comeback with ‘Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam’. His followup to the little gem ‘KIN’ impresses to a certain extent with a quirky screenplay.

Bogan
the film largely works on the chemistry of Arvind Swami and Jayam Ravi, the enigma they carried in 'Thanioruvan' is back in a different format and they compete out to make the plot very entertaining. The Lakshman’s screenplay is the key for its racy nature.

Enakku Vaitha Adimaigal
Writer-director Mahendran Rajamani’s strength lies in his natural dialogues which spark off so much humor and to his credit all his comedy lines and scenes succeed. He has also extracted neat performances from his entire cast including minor ones. Attempting a dark comedy he has consistently stuck to the task till the very end and that in itself is enough to give him a warm welcome.

Yaman
The screenplay, which moves at a slow pace is still engaging due to the clever use of betrayal as a motif throughout. The master stroke is in the climax when the hero unknowingly avenges his father even as he accomplishes the dream of both his father and grandfather.

Kattapava Kaanom
Writer-Director Mani Seiyon’s strength is comedy and that too of the adult variety and he scores big in that department. Its also refreshing to see a film that breaks all conventions like the mandatory duet or fight and a good example of the different thinking is in the climax when the villain wonders whether he is the bad guy or Sibi.

Enga Amma Rani
‘Enga Amma Rani’ is an honest attempt to convey the greatness of the mother and her sacrifices and succeeds due to which its shortcomings can be condoned.

Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae
Director Ike comes with a strong background, being the grandson of the legendary M.R. Radha and having assisted Priyadarshan and Kamal Haasan. His ‘Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae’ is the production debut of Atlee and armed with an ensemble cast makes a fairly good debut.

Rangoon
Rajkumar the debutant director treats 'Rangoon' with utmost care deep diving into the characters that hold the essence of the movie, brings an interesting take on underworld setting that can question a man on his character, as bad or good. Hands down, this is simply the best of Gautam Karthik’s act, he sheds that chocolate boy image by a large margin to something grittier.

Maragatha Naanayam
The thing about these wild card movies are really annoying, they don’t make any noise, come rather too quietly but capture our hearts by surprise! Debut director Saravanan handles Maragatha Naanayam like a pro by including more than a dozen actors also giving them enough justice to their roles. The director takes a blender, mixes fantasy, humor, horror and a few light hearted twists to give a complete light hearted entertainer in Maragatha Naanayam. This definitely is Aadhi’s much deserved break and will definitely be turning point for all other characters too.

Pandigai
'Chennai 28' star Vijayalakshmi makes an impressive debut as a producer with 'Pandigai' directed by her husband Feroz, who also shows a lot of promise in his first venture. Hero Krishna true to his words has delivered a worthy performance on par with his 'Kazhugu' and 'Yamirukka Bayamey'.

Ivan Thanthiran
After the critically acclaimed hit film 'Rangoon' that released last month, Gautham Karthik could not have asked for a better follow up than 'Ivan Thanthiran' directed by R.Kannan which is an enjoyable commercial entertainer that deals with a social issue affecting the students and education in a pretty convincing manner.

Uru
Director Vijay Anand has been brilliantly supported by three people to achieve his vision. Heroine Sai Dhanshika- who gets to perform a near solo act for a considerable portion of the second half and she has done a fantastic job as a innocent woman getting trapped into a house to escape from a killer, music director Johan with his intriguing background score that uses sounds and silence in apt proportions and cinematographer Prasanna Kumar who captures the scenic beauty of Meghamalai with some awesome top angle shots and also the transforms the chilling effect of the night sequences to the viewer.

Sathya
Sibiraj after a decent outing as an actor in 'Kattapava Kaanom' is back with 'Sathya' directed by Pradeep Krishnamoorthy which is the remake of the Telugu sleeper hit 'Kshanam'. Pradeep Krishnamoorthy of 'Saithaan' fame has extracted solid performances from his cast and technical crew.

Thiruttu Payale 2
The entire first half is gripping and well set up with many interesting episodes like Bobby bringing down a television channel, the sequences revealing how the villain character carefully studies his female victims for months together by their social media postings and sways them to virtually enter their homes.

Director Gaurav Narayanan is known for his thriller screenplays involving technological crimes and in 'Ippadai Vellum' he joins hands with romantic comedy hero Udayanidhi Stalin and manages to deliver an implausible but racy film that is engaging in most parts.

Here comes 'Aval' an attempt at pure horror with a liberal dose of adult elements that impresses to a certain degree and could open the doors to more such fare in Kollywood. Milind Rau and Siddharth's screenplay seems heavily inspired by the likes of 'The Ring' and 'Conjuring' but the film is technically sound and the director has made an impressive debut that is long overdue.

Santhosh P Jayakumar has delivered the most explicit adult comedy ever in Tamil cinema and that does not take anything away from him as it is a legitimate genre and he has juggled his running gags up nicely. The big plusses of ‘Thupparivaalan’ are the beautiful visuals, attention to details, the symphony styled background score, impeccable art direction and well choreographed stunts. The scene in which Bhagyaraj smothers his wife with a pillow and Anu Emmanuel’s last moments are touching.

Thala Ajith’s mass presence the major plus. Anirudh's bgm packs the punch for a mass hero action film like 'Vivegam'. In most places the presence of the music is not overbearing and that itself is a appreciable aspect of his work The already hit songs are optimally used and pictured well. Vetri's visuals bring in the much needed international flavour Stunt sequences are simply awesome. Milan's Art direction is another big plus for the film and plays a vital role in bringing the international feel to the film.

We have seen Arjun as a cop in many films but Ranjith of 'Nibunan' is entirely different from what he has played so far. This cop is not only smart, intelligent, playful, brave and effective. He is also matured with age and experience. Arjun displays a fantastic understanding of this multi-layered character.
