Avani Lekhara won India's first medal in shooting at the Tokyo Paralympics in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event on Monday. Lekhara won the gold medal with a total score of 249.6 in the final, equalling the world record. This is India's fourth medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games so far.

After making history, she said, "I can't describe this feeling, I'm feeling like I'm on top of the world. It's unexplainable, I'm so happy I could be the one to contribute it. Hopefully, there's a lot of medals more to come."I was just saying one thing, that I have to take one shot at a time. There's nothing else that matters now, just take one shot at a time and just finish it." she added.

PM Narendra Modi took to his Twitter and wished her with a heart-felt note. He wrote, "Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara! Congratulations on winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold, made possible due to your industrious nature and passion towards shooting. This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavours".

On Monday, Yogesh Kathuniya won silver in the discus throw. Bhavinaben Patel clinched a historic silver in table tennis, while high jumper Nishad Kumar won a silver in the men's high jump event.
