A video released by the Humane Society of the United States shows a father and son from Alaska ruthlessly killing a hibernating mother bear and her two cubs while they were asleep in their den. The video was recorded last spring on Esther Island.

The Alaska Wildlife Troopers, in a statement last August, said that Andrew Renner (41) and his son Owen (18) went skiing on April 18, 2018, when they saw the adult bear sleeping in her den. They fired at the animal twice, before killing her “shrieking” cubs as well. As the bears were being monitored by a motion-activated camera as part of a study by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the activity of the men was recorded too. As they posed for photographs, one of them even bragged that “they’ll never be able to link it to us.” Assistant Attorney General Aaron Peterson said in a statement, “The defendant, and anyone else that would pursue game in our state should be on notice that killing a sow with cubs and then poaching the cubs to cover it up, will result in a significant jail term and loss of hunting privileges.”

After Andrew Renner and Owen pleaded guilty to the illegal activity, the former spent three months in jail with a fine of $9,000 (Rs. 6,30,000) and had to forfeit personal property, including a boat, his truck, firearms, and a poaching gear, along with losing his hunting privileges for 10 years, while his son was sentenced to probation and community service and will be required to take a hunters’ safety course, according to a report.
