Will India have shortage of ventilators by June 1st week?

"The most striking statistic of Coronavirus in India: 21,632 active cases, only 80 on ventilators, according to the Health Ministry data. The other: 20 districts account for 60 percent of the cases," tweeted out senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai on Wednesday. The data on 80 ventilators pertains to an update given on Monday.

Many are regarding this as a good piece of news. India's healthcare system is well within its capacity to battle Covid-19, they say. "According to India's Home Ministry, a total of 52,094 ventilators have been ordered from domestic units. 10,500 of those are due to be supplied by April 30. Another 18,000 ventilators are scheduled for delivery by May 30, while 20,000 more will be delivered by June 30," says Saura Jha, a social media influencer.

So far, so good

However, the real problem will arise in May and later. "If infections continue to rise at the same rate in May as they have done so far in April, India could be facing a deficit in isolation beds by the end of May, and in intensive care unit (ICU) beds and ventilators by the first week of June," says Livemint, adding, "In line with projections from various global studies, we have assumed that 5% of cases require ICU care and 3% of cases would be on the ventilator."

The production of ventilators has been ramped up.
