Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - Moderately Fine
IndiaGlitz  [Wednesday, November 11, 2009]

This week’s releases have been somewhat admirable as they do engross us with different genres. If ‘Jail’ happens to be an exceptional raw-drama, here’s ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ that gets along for a jolly-ridden clichéd tale picked from various South Indian flicks. Naturally, Rajkumar Santhoshi deserves special mention for having hop-skipped into a comedy genre after years followed by ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. On pars, Ranbir Kapoor’s screen presence uplifts the substantiality of APKGK to a greater degree. And finally, the seraphic belle Katrina Kaif has it all offering a warm treat for lads in town.

Fine! Though brimmed with such finesses, the film lags off from getting through distinction due to flimsy narration. Say for instances, kidnapping a girl of mistaken identity is a prototyped aspect we’ve seen over times in films. Similarly, the protagonist taking on ‘merger’ task of uniting couples is a cliché again.

Prem's (Ranbir Kapoor) fundas in life were very simple - be happy...make others happy...keep the town happy... But these supposedly simple fundas usually results in disastrous consequences for Prem, the members of his Happy Club, and the town!

It may have been a case of mistaken identity that led Prem to kidnap Jenny (Katrina Kaif). And it was sheer greed that made Prem try to pull a fast one over her father. As for sweet and simple Jenny, brought up by indifferent and uncaring foster parents, all she longed was to love and be loved in return.

And it was love and only love for Jenny that made Prem turn over a new leaf. From hardly working vagabond he began working hard to make money... From a besotted Romeo, he becomes a mature and thoughtful Majnu who put Jenny's happiness above everything else..But his hopes are overshadowed when Jenny reveals that she’s already in love with her guy (Upen Patel). Now Prem clings onto the task of uniting the lovers and what unfolds next is a series of incidents that leads to a predictable climax.

Although, you’ll get to witness more of fatuous comedy tracks, that doesn’t bother you much. As mentioned earlier, Ranbir and Katrina do take over the chore of keeping things in momentum. But Katrina has to improve a lot over her Hindi.

It’s really displeasing to see the best actors Darshan Jariwala and Govind Namdeo delineated with flimsy roles. Perhaps, this could be the most uncollectible film in their career. The film excels out and most with technical aspects. Fantastic locations with eye-catching visuals canned by Thiru are top-notching. Followed by his musical entrancements with ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and yet to release ‘Tum Mile’, Pritham puts us on for the delighted fiesta of music.

Finally, ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ proves to be a passable show with some mediocre and indeed certain upbeat factors does helps in killing our time.

Verdict: Watch it without expectations.

Rating: ***
