Last year, it was reported that streaming giant Netflix would be taking steps to curb the practice of password-sharing among its users. It came out with a blueprint to go for an all-out crackdown. Netflix's co-CEO Reed Hastings was quoted as saying that the platform is aware of password-sharing practices for some time now. However, it didn't take the matter seriously as subscription and revenue growth had been significant up until the first quarter of last year. The acquisition and growth downturn forced Netflix to take action.

Till now, the curbs on the password-sharing culture were limited to advanced countries in the West. The crackdown has now reached the shores of India.

The move has angered Netflix users. "Never forget that Netflix purposefully supported password sharing for their growth. You are paying for a certain number of screens. It shouldn't matter where those screens are located," a Twitter user commented.

However, there is another version of the truth. Netflix has been quoted as saying that its anti-password sharing measures were posted as an error early this month and have since been undone.
