Ahead of the release of 'Chalo' on Feb 2, Venky Kudumula is confident. Starring Naga Shourya and Rashmika Mandanna, this film is his maiden project. In this interview, the director talks about how the project fell into place, and more.

What is your background?

I hail from Khammam. I have pursued MBA. I had worked under Teja garu for 'Neeku Naku Dash Dash'. I did a small role in that film. That's how my journey started. I worked on 'Jadugadu' and the Telugu version of 'Thoofan'. I then moved on to work with Trivikram garu for 'A Aa'.

How did 'Chalo' fall into place?

I have known Naga Shourya since the days of 'Jadugadu'. He wanted to make me a director. I too wanted to debut with his film. But I didn't express my wish to me directly as I feared that our friendship might be affected. Once I was done with 'A Aa', he called me up and told me to keep a story ready. I felt very happy.

What is the idea behind making this film?

Initially, I wanted to do a crime-comedy. But Shourya insisted that a family entertainer would be better. I then worked on his characterization. Hitherto, we have seen Shourya in calm roles. In 'Chalo', you are going to see him in an energetic role. I then told him that the story would be set in the backdrop of a village bordering two states. He played ball.

Since you know Trivikram, did you tell him this story?

Although it was only on one film that I worked with Trivikram garu, I have a good relationship with him. I wanted to work with him on 'Agnyaathavaasi', too. But he asked me to go on to become a director and assured me of his support. A few days later, I got this opportunity. I did tell him the storyline, which he liked. I am inspired by the works of Puri Jagannadh garu and Trivikram garu, whose influence would be there on all young directors. However, one shouldn't try to imitate Trivikram garu.

How did Naga Shourya's parents end up producing this movie?

This story was narrated to other producers. They liked it. However, they wanted it to be made on a small budget. It's then that Aunty and Uncle felt that they should do this film come what may. They treat me as their own family member. They gave me all the freedom.

What made you choose Rashmika Mandanna?

I was to Chennai to develop the story of 'Chalo'. It's where I happened to watch 'Kirrak Party' (Kannada). I felt that Rashmika is an interesting talent. Incidentally, Shourya too liked her in the film.
