BJP MPs remarks on cleaning toilets draws flak

Bhopal BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur is in the news for controversially commenting that she hasn't been elected to clean drains and toilets. Obviously, this is unbecoming of a parliamentarian at a time when the Clean India Mission has been seeking to change behaviour and attitude of Indians towards sanitation.

Expectedly, Pragya has been trolled for going against the spirit of the Mission. Among her early critics is Asaduddin Owaisi of the AIMIM. "Not at all surprised, neither I am shocked by this obnoxious statement; she says this because that is her thought process. The MP believes in the caste and class discrimination happening in India. She also clearly tells that the kind of work the caste has defined, that should continue. It is very unfortunate. Also, she has openly opposed the Prime Minister's program."

However, there are those who are defending her remarks. "Sadhvi Pragya was merely talking about the varied responsibilities of the various organs of the state. She was not insulting the manual job of cleaners," a commentator wrote on Facebook.
