BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has claimed for many years that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. "He is not an Indian," Swamy often says.

Based on a complaint lodged by Swamy with the Centre, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday issued a notice to the Congress chief. The Government of India has asked Rahul to explain the facts related to his citizenship within 15 days.

As per the complaint received by the MHA, Rahul's date of birth is June 19, 1970. In a document presented to a British company, Rahul allegedly declared his nationality as British in the years 2005 and 2006.

Speaking on the development, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said, "When a Member of Parliament writes to any ministry, action required on their query is taken. It is not a big development, it is a normal process."
