Shazam! Review

Shazam : DC's turn to venture into fun

What is your first impression on DC comics and movies? Mostly, dark, straight forward serious gloomy screens with a hero who has a patchy flashback. Well, Shazam is delightfully fresh and funny. Finally, a movie from the producers who are known to keep things rock solid and serious, well not completely but satisfactorily.

Young Billy Batson has spent most of his childhood escaping foster homes in the hopes of finding his mother; as a 4-year-old, Billy got lost at a carnival and never found her again, although he’s sure she’s still looking for him. So, when a new set of foster parents take him in, he’s got one eye on the door, even though everyone seems nice, particularly Freddy, a self-confessed Superman fan. One day while riding the subway, Billy finds himself mysteriously translated to an otherworldly cave where he encounters a wizard who has apparently decided that Billy is the natural heir to the superpowers he can pass on. Merely by saying the magic word - SHAZAM, Billy becomes transformed into the brightly costumed, heavily muscled, adult character (Zachary). Upon returning home, the confused and overwhelmed Billy accidentally reveals his new abilities to a thrilled Freddy. At first, the most useful thing they can think of to do with Billy's alter ego is buy some beer. But when they interrupt a convenience store robbery and Billy discovers, much to his childlike glee, that he's immune to bullets, he and Freddy decide to explore exactly what his superpowers entail.

The journey is exactly what the trailer promised, two teenagers take on a journey toying with something they have never encountered, and their paths strike something even bigger. It’s Freddy Freeman who really connects Billy , his reactions completely enticing as and when he finds out something new. A sarcastic, disabled superhero fanatic who’s sadly in touch with his place in the world, Freddy would give anything to be Shazam, and Freeman marvelously conveys the bittersweet pleasures of second-hand excitement; Shazam is still the coolest thing that’s ever happened to him, even if it didn’t happen to him. Freddy has fantastic chemistry with Billy and super hero alter ego, becoming a friend and a hilariously irresponsible mentor to them both as the film nails the excitement of two kids building a superhero from scratch.

Shazam is no Deadpool, its not that untypical suave superhero who gets altogether a different meaning for being a superhero. Shazam is every teenagers dream, even if that’s for being a mentor or as the super hero itself. Albeit the phenomenon of a superhero and its added responsibility is something huge for a teenager, it can easily be related to that of other peer pressures that a teenager carries. A teen is a fun loving teen no matter what, give him something larger than life and the experience continues to amaze him, that joy and excitement makes Shazam a terrific watch. Its safe to say Shazam is a teenagers movie with high aspirations.

Verdict : Shazam is every teenager’s dream come true, captures the right emotions of an adolescent with every inch of creativity.
